Editorial Standards

Truth, Accountability, and South Africa's Stories

Africa Truth Observer is committed to serving South African readers with accurate, fair, and independent journalism. These editorial standards guide our reporting and reflect our dedication to truth, accountability, and the public interest. Accuracy and Verification Accuracy is the foundation of our journalism. All factual claims must be verified through primary sources whenever possible. Our reporters conduct thorough research, consult multiple sources, and cross-reference information before publication. We distinguish clearly between facts, analysis, and opinion. Numbers, dates, names, and attributions are verified independently. When information cannot be fully verified, we transparently communicate the limitations to readers. Sourcing and Attribution We clearly attribute information to its source, whether on-the-record, on background, or off-the-record. We explain to readers why sources may request anonymity and assess the credibility of unnamed sources carefully. We avoid using anonymous sources for allegations or controversial claims when on-the-record sources are available. Our reporters build relationships with sources based on trust while maintaining professional distance. We do not pay sources for information except in exceptional circumstances, which we disclose to readers. Independence and Conflicts of Interest Africa Truth Observer maintains strict independence from political, commercial, and other interests that could compromise our journalism. Our editorial decisions are made solely on newsworthiness and public interest. Staff members disclose potential conflicts of interest to editors before reporting on related matters. We do not accept gifts, favors, or special treatment from sources or subjects of coverage. Advertising and business operations are completely separate from editorial decisions. Our editorial board operates independently and reviews potential conflicts annually. Corrections and Accountability We correct errors promptly and transparently. When mistakes are identified, corrections are published clearly with explanation of what was changed. We maintain a public corrections archive and publish a weekly corrections summary. Readers can submit corrections through our dedicated corrections desk, and we respond to all submissions professionally and thoroughly. Corrections are viewed as opportunities to strengthen our credibility rather than admissions of failure. AI Use and Disclosure Africa Truth Observer uses artificial intelligence tools to assist with research, data analysis, and initial draft organization. However, all content is written, edited, and fact-checked by human journalists. We disclose AI use in our reporting processes when it significantly contributes to story development. We do not use AI to replace human judgment, verification, or editorial decision-making. Our commitment to accuracy and accountability remains unchanged regardless of tools employed. Reader Trust and Accountability Our relationship with readers is built on trust and transparency. We explain our reporting processes, acknowledge limitations in our knowledge, and welcome feedback. We engage with our community through letters to the editor, reader panels, and public forums. When we make mistakes, we acknowledge them openly. We are accountable to our readers, our sources, and the communities we cover. This commitment to transparency and accountability is central to everything we publish.
